How to Become a Canadian Injury Lawyer

Here are the seven steps to becoming an injury lawyer in Canada:

  • Get your diploma from secondary school
  • Get a Bachelor’s degree from a qualified university (the more prestigious the better). Surprisingly, this degree can be in almost any field. It can be something very different from the practice of law, such as biochemistry, literature, or even music. There is sound logic for this, lawyers need diverse knowledge because the practice of law covers every field in some way. Scoring well in your chosen degree (top honors) is the requirement to go on to law school. Prepare for the LSAT during your first three years of university. Take the LSAT test during the last year of university studies.
  • Score extremely well on the LSAT test. The LSAT is used in both Canada and USA. Some law schools accept applicants who have taken the LSAT more than once. Learn the exact policy on taking the LSAT a second time because some average the scores, some take the highest score, but some actually use the lowest score.
  • Apply to law schools. It is very important to apply to more than one. In Canada, there are only 16 law schools, half of them are located in Ontario, so the competition is fierce for applicants. In the USA, there are hundreds of law schools. Getting a law degree from another country, besides Canada, does not preclude the practice of law in Canada. Be sure to check the rules of reciprocity for the particular non-Canadian school of interest.
  • Finish the four years of coursework and get the law degree. Expect to study and work very hard during this period.
  • Work for a law firm or judge in a paid position, with qualified supervision of another lawyer, for a minimum of ten months. This is called articling in Canada. Most students achieve this during the summer months while still in law school. During this time, take the Bar Admission Course. There are additional requirements for non-Canadian law degrees. Pass the Bar Exam.
  • Open your private law practice in the specialty area of personal injury or join a law firm which does this work. There are also not-for-profit organizations doing work in this area, such as legal clinics, who use lawyers on their staff. Some government jobs for lawyers relate to product safety and on-the-job injuries as well.
